On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) successfully organized a webinar titled “Science & Tech Talks” under the theme “Mathematics for Machine Learning and Discrete Model Construction, Optimal Control Application for Public Policy.”

The event was chaired by Dr. Siti Rusdiana, M.Eng., and officially opened by the Dean of FMIPA USK, Prof. Taufik Fuadi Abidin, S.Si., M.Tech. The webinar, which was attended by 214 participants, featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Widodo Samyono from the Division of Arts and Sciences, Jarvis Christian University, USA, and Dr. Said Munzir, M.Eng.Sc. from the Department of Mathematics, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Aceh. The session was moderated by Vera Halfiani, S.Si., M.Mat. from the same department.
During the webinar, both speakers elaborated on the crucial role of mathematics in machine learning and optimal control.
Dr. Widodo Samyono presented the use of mathematical concepts such as linear algebra, calculus, and probability in machine learning applications, particularly in cancer research. Meanwhile, Dr. Said Munzir, M.Eng.Sc., explained various paradigms in decision-making, including intuition-based, data-driven, simulation-based, and optimal control approaches. He demonstrated how optimal control theory can be applied to public policy decision-making through discrete modeling methods.

The discussion highlighted that mathematics plays a fundamental role in advancing machine learning and developing data-driven policies using optimal control. The webinar concluded successfully, providing participants with new insights into the practical applications of mathematics in modern technology and policy analysis.
The Department of Mathematics FMIPA USK hopes that similar academic events will continue to be held in the future to foster innovation and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in applied mathematics.
