The Mathematics Student Association (HIMATIKA) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Syiah Kuala, is once again organizing its annual event, MATHEMATICS FAIR XVIII 2025, as an educational, competitive, and inspirational platform for young generations to develop their interest and abilities in mathematics.

In 2025, Mathematics Fair XVIII carries the theme “Mathematics in Everyday Life: Realizing the Power of Numbers Around Us.” This theme emphasizes that mathematics is present and plays an important role in many aspects of daily life, ranging from simple activities such as shopping and managing personal finances to decision-making processes and problem-solving. Through this theme, the public is invited to view mathematics as a living, applicable, and relevant discipline, rather than merely an abstract concept confined to the classroom.

This event aims to increase public interest—particularly in Aceh Province—in mathematics, to broaden understanding and application of mathematics in real-life contexts, and to foster interaction and collaboration among mathematics enthusiasts. In addition, Mathematics Fair XVIII 2025 serves as a platform to nurture students’ academic potential and talents, promote a healthy culture of competition, and introduce various academic activities of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA USK, to the wider community.

Overall, the event is expected to yield benefits such as the growth of students’ interest and talent in mathematics, increased public awareness of the role of mathematics, a shift in the misconception that mathematics is inherently difficult, and the availability of a positive and constructive competitive arena for students and university learners.

Series of Activities

MATHEMATICS FAIR XVIII 2025 consists of several structured activities, as follows:

1. Mathematics Olympiad

The Mathematics Olympiad is an annual HIMATIKA program aimed at high school (SMA/MA/SMK) students and university students. It seeks to foster healthy competition and improve the quality of mathematics and science education. The Olympiad will be conducted in a single round, selecting three best participants from each level.

  • Registration Period: October 18–24, 2025
  • Event Date: October 25, 2025
  • Venue: FMIPA USK Classrooms

Participants will receive certificates, while winners will be awarded trophies, certificates, and educational savings.

2. Speed Calculation Competition

The Speed Calculation Competition is a contest of rapid problem-solving in mathematics for junior high school (SMP) students. Three winners in each category will receive certificates and educational savings.

  • Registration Period: October 18–24, 2025
  • Event Date: October 25, 2025
  • Venue: FMIPA USK Classrooms

3. Mathematics Race

The Mathematics Race is intended for elementary school (SD) students competing in teams. This competition combines quick calculations with physical activities by passing through several mathematics problem stations. Each team consists of three members, and the three fastest teams will be declared winners.

  • Registration Period: October 18–24, 2025
  • Event Date: October 26, 2025
  • Venue: FMIPA USK Auditorium

4. National Mathematical Modeling Competition

This competition is open to undergraduate students from various universities. Each team, consisting of three members, will solve real-world problems using a mathematical modeling approach, from model formulation to analysis and presentation of results.

  • Registration Period: October 18–24, 2025
  • Event Dates: October 25–26, 2025
  • Venue: Online (via Zoom)

The three best teams will receive certificates of appreciation and educational savings.

5. MATHPreneur CORNER

To strengthen the applied and entrepreneurial aspects, Mathematics Fair XVIII 2025 also features MATHPreneur CORNER, organized by the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA Universitas Syiah Kuala, as part of the MathFair 2025 series.

This activity carries the theme “Entrepreneurial Skills Are Not Only About Having Ideas, but Also Execution,” aiming to instill an entrepreneurial spirit in students by utilizing mathematical logic and thinking patterns in business.

  • Day/Date: Saturday & Sunday, November 15–16, 2025
  • Time: 09.00 – 16.00 WIB
  • Location: Plateran Lobby, Building C, Department of Mathematics (1st Floor)
  • Note: Part of the 12th week of the Entrepreneurship Course

The agenda of MATHPreneur CORNER includes student product exhibitions and sales, a sharing session titled “Business Logic of Mathematics Students,” and a business idea competition. Through this activity, students are encouraged to create, innovate, and engage in real business practices by integrating analytical skills and mathematical logic into entrepreneurship.

Through the implementation of Mathematics Fair XVIII 2025, HIMATIKA FMIPA USK hopes that this event will serve as an educational and inspirational platform that reinforces the role of mathematics as a discipline closely connected to everyday life, while also encouraging the emergence of a generation that is logical, critical, creative, and solution-oriented in facing the challenges of the modern era.
