One of the outcomes of the Mathematics Study Program curriculum revision in 2016 was the introduction of the Financial Mathematics course. Based on this development, on October 12, 2018, the Mathematics Study Program organized a guest lecture by inviting a financial mathematics expert from the Department of Mathematics, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), namely Dr. Ir. Endar H. Nugrahani, MS. Moderated by Dr. Intan Syahrini, the event was officially opened by the Head of the Mathematics Study Program, Nurmaulidar, M.Sc. In her opening remarks, the Head of the Study Program expressed the hope that students would gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in the financial sector.
Held at the FMIPA Unsyiah Auditorium, the guest lecture entitled “Actuarial Science: A Beautiful Encounter of Mathematics, Statistics, and Economics” introduced the actuarial profession as an alternative career path for mathematics graduates, offering high salaries and strong demand in the job market. To pursue a career as an actuary, specialized expertise in mathematics, statistics, and economics is required. Therefore, Dr. Endar encouraged students to deepen their understanding of these fields, including by choosing actuarial-related topics for their final projects.
Following the guest lecture for mathematics students, the Mathematics Study Program collaborated with Dr. Endar to conduct community service activities in the form of “Actuarial Outreach” programs at senior high schools. SMA Lab School Unsyiah and SMA Negeri 3 were selected as the venues for this outreach. The principal of SMA Negeri 3 expressed great appreciation for the activity and hoped that it would broaden students’ perspectives on future career opportunities, particularly in the financial sector.
