On Thursday, November 10, 2022, the Department of Mathematics held a webinar attended by students, lecturers, and general participants from several faculties at USK as well as from other universities. The webinar aimed to introduce the Transcendent Journal of Mathematics and Applications and to inspire students to develop creative ideas for writing and publishing their scientific works.

The event was moderated by both students and lecturers from the Department of Mathematics. The invited speakers were Dr. Muhammad Iqhrammullah, M.Si. (USK) and Lutfi Mardianto, S.Pd., M.Si. (Institut Teknologi Sumatera). In his presentation, Dr. Iqhrammullah discussed several effective approaches to reading and understanding scientific literature. He emphasized that to grasp the meaning of unfamiliar terms, one must read multiple related references until consistent meanings emerge across different articles. He encouraged participants to read, conduct research, write, and publish their findings.

In the second session, Mr. Lutfi highlighted the importance of perseverance in generating research ideas in mathematics. He provided an in-depth explanation of how to identify a research gap and develop ideas from it, particularly focusing on mathematical finance research.

The enthusiasm of the participants was remarkable. The committee recorded eight questions, all of which were thoroughly answered by the speakers. Heri Purnawan, a lecturer from UNISLA, asked how lecturers and students could improve the quality of their articles when there are no mentors with expertise in their research area. The speakers suggested two solutions: engaging in inter-university research collaborations and reading high-quality journal articles from reputable publishers. Meanwhile, Afifah, a Mathematics student, asked about validation in simulation-based research. Mr. Lutfi confidently explained that validation can be done by comparing simulations with exact solutions:

“We can calculate the error relative to the exact solution. However, if no exact solution exists, we can validate the simulation results by comparing them with real-world data or observable trends,” he explained.

In the final session, the moderator introduced the Transcendent Journal of Mathematics and Applications, published by the Department of Mathematics, encouraging participants to explore the journal’s content and submit their manuscripts for publication. [MI]
